The latest by retro-soul queen Sharon Jones opens on bass-drum thunder and orchestral chimes, like an Ennio Morricone fanfare for a lawman returned to settle scores. That's appropriate for Jones, who's been battling pancreatic cancer but sounds utterly unbowed. Retreat is a funky warning to a cocky suitor, and Making Up and Breaking Up is all echo-chamber slow groove and girl-group backing vocals, sublime in period accuracy and in-the-moment passion. Sharon Jones, the soul singer and powerful voice of the band the Dap-Kings, died on Friday of pancreatic cancer that had been in remission but returned last year. She was 60. Joness death was confirmed by Judy Miller Silverman, her publicist. She said Ms. Jones was surrounded by members of the Dap-Kings and other loved ones when she died. During her illness, Ms. Jones and the Dap-Kings earned a Grammy nomination in 2015 for best R&B album with Give the People What They Want. Why is there not a category for soul Ms. Jones told Billboard at the time. Across those albums she revealed a voice of lugubrious beauty, and made an art form of songs that were emotionally and musically raw. It was a combination that earned her a fanbase that was not just devoted but deeply and near-spiritually connected to her music. And so her fifth album is one of the years most ardently anticipated her return awaited by fans and critics alike, and its teaser single, Comeback Kid, seized upon and analysed upon its release late last year. A faster, firmer and more boisterous record, Comeback Kid confused some listeners: is this, they wondered, a new Sharon Van. Sharon Van Etten on stage in Austin, Texas, in October 2018. Jones' voice is the true star of the show, as usual, soaring and coasting with complete command and never sacrificing any character or nuance for the sake of sounding more like any of her '60s reference points. While Give the People What They Want is somewhat brief by 2014 standards, clocking in at just over half an hour, if it had been released in 1966, it would be regarded as a picture of soul perfection. Theres an old-school toughness about Sharon Jones, exemplified by the way the 57-year-old soul singer fought back after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last spring. Her natural ebullience still drives the splendid Give the People What They Want, a hook-laden affair keeping up the high standard set by I Learned the Hard Way and 2011s punchy Soul Time, as good an R&B album as any in recent years. The bullish attitude is there right from the opening Retreat , an assertive blend of Motown snap, Stax horns and Spector chimes in a retro-soul cocktail: Step back she warns, Ill ma. 17 people follow this.
