Legend 33
A near-perfect single, remixed in extended form. The extended dance version keeps all of the elements that make "West End Girls" so brilliant: that emotional pad of synths, those distant horns, the backing vocals. There are added clap-heavy percussion sections to draw out the length (it was the 80s, after all), but I find them charming. The b-side, "A Man Could Get Arrested", is lovely, and Tennant's melodic vocal progression and rhythms in it are immediately familiar and comfortable ("Opportunities", etc.). I really enjoy when a vocalist finds something that works really well and recycles it in new forms in subsequent variations. The Shep Pettibone dub version is a blissful, very extended (over nine minutes) instrumental excursion. You know how he does it. Classic.
