Are You Alone is the fourth and final studio album from Canadian pop duo Majical Cloudz, released on October 16, 2015 on Matador Records. The album was nominated for a Juno Award in 2016. On their sophomore album, this Canadian art-pop duo distill the core melancholy and introspection and some melodic themes of New Wave architects like Depeche Mode and New Order. Songs like Silver Car Crash and Downtown are strikingly austere: stripped to their instrumental core, hovering in Matthew Ottos electronic gauze, and anchored by Devon Welshs steadfast baritone. While the experiences he catalogs seem steeped in depression and a warped sort of intimacy, they feel less confessional and more driven by the need to get at the truth of a sadness that's universal. Rooted in solo material written by Devon Welsh between rural Ontario and Montreal, he joined with Matthew Otto in February 2012 to collaboratively produce and perform the music. Their performance was deeply expressive - strong vocals sat on top of washes of white noise, filtered synths and sparse thuds. The new Majical Cloudz album picks up where Impersonator left off: Stark, ethereal instrumentals buoyed by frontman Devon Welsh's unflinching voice. His counterpart, Matthew Otto, doesn't try and approximate backing musicians so much as create vapor trails where backing musicians might've stood. Halfway through Majical Cloudz's set at the 2014 Pitchfork Music Festival, the music cut out, leaving singer Devon Welsh alone with a live microphone in front of 6,000 people. The scene put a new spin on an old bad dream: Not only had Welsh shown up to class without clothes on, but the classroom had become a baseball field and everyone on it was a little bit drunk. The album begins like a dust bowl sunrise, with plunking, distorted piano tones, and Devon Welsh's calm, covetous vocals on the loss-pervaded Disappeared Those that forever disappearedAll I want is for you to talk to me. It's impressionistic, almost Debussy-like but with fewer notes, and eventually saxophone and the soft sounds of rushing water
