Lester Raymond Brown March 14, 1912 January 4, 2001 was an American jazz musician who led the big band Les Brown and His Band of Renown for nearly seven decades from 1938 to 2000. Brown was born in Reinerton, Pennsylvania. He enrolled in the Conway Military Band School later part of Ithaca College in 1926, studying with famous bandleader Patrick Conway for three years before receiving a music scholarship to the New York Military Academy, where he graduated in 1932. Brown attended college at Duke. Schoen's talents are certainly on display here, as it is his impressive charts that are used for the session. Think of Stan Kenton and Ellington spending time in and out of an elevator and you get the picture - fine playing and arrangements throughout, with just enough in the way of fetching solo work and challenging twists and turns to keep the listener both tapping his feet and thinking twice about the last passage played. Since most of these selections are only about two minutes long, the band has little to do other than read its parts so this CD is recommended mostly to fans of the singers.
