On this six-song EP, Adamson extrapolates from contemporary black dance beats, samples his American publicist's answering machine message and Jane Birkin's hit Je T'Aime, and throws in lounge jazz piano bits and more. The pieces aren't that striking, and one gets the sense that he's tossing out some ideas to play with in the interim between full-length scoresalbums. Band Name Barry Adamson. He came to prominence in the late 1970s as a member of the post-punk band Magazine and went on to work with Visage, the Birthday Party, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and the electro musicians Pan Sonic. Adamson rejoined the Bad Seeds for the release of their 2013 album, Push the Sky Away. He played bass on several songs and also toured with the band on drums and keyboards to fill in for an ailing Thomas Wydler. The Negro Inside Me. Cinema Is King. Barry Adamson is one smart fella. He's got a film-score genius' synesthetic talent for visual audio and an acidic but bemused wit. His work ages well - nearly ten years later, The Negro Inside Me still burns. The first track is a little weak, revolving around a PR flack's message that's only interesting the first time. From there the album gathers speed and strength, peaking with the energetic Cold Black Preach and the Serge Gainsbourg remixtribute Je T' Non Plus. Adamson's work is so consistently good that it's hard to pick a starting point, so I reckon this EP is as good a place as any. Read more
